Specialties
Professional background
I am a UK trained Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive Surgeon. I take a holistic approach to patient care and will take the time needed to understand your problem and provide evidence-based treatment options. My main subspecialty is hand and wrist surgery but I also provide skin cancer operations and general plastic surgery care including managing wounds and emergencies.
I maximise non-surgical treatments. If surgery is recommended, I promote patient safety and minimises down time. For instance, most hand surgery is offered under local anaesthetic (Wide Awake Local Anaesthetic No Tourniquet, WALANT surgery). I have designed a table that enables patients to sit up whilst having hand surgery (https://aneticaid.com/products/the-gardiner-hand-surgery-system-tm).
I completed my medical training at the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford before completing a PhD at Imperial College London. My plastic surgery training was on the London rotation before undertaking fellowships in hand surgery, extremity reconstruction and aesthetic surgery.
Research interests
I am Associate Medical Director for Research and Innovation at Frimley Health and hold academic positions at the University of Oxford and University of Surrey. My main research interests are hand osteoarthritis and surgical randomised controlled trials. Further information is available here: https://www.ndorms.ox.ac.uk/team/matthew-gardiner
